Eco-Revival Pakistan Vision

The environment is a place where creatures make connections and use the resources provided by that place for their use. If we go back to history we see a balance between the environment and creatures, where sources were replenishable and the ecosystem was in a healthy shape. Over time, due to modernization in human societies, the expansion of agricultural settlements, and the development of advanced infrastructure, the environment started to degrade gradually. Humans have been transforming ecosystems for thousands of years which led to an astonishing rate of climate change and other destructive outcomes.

What is the use of a house if you haven’t got a tolerable planet to put it on? ― Henry David Thoreau

In light of this climate change is the biggest issue involving global concern. It has a long-lasting effect on the environment and the creatures that live in it. The most obvious effect is global warming which is currently impacting unlikely areas and creating problems for everyone involved. There are a lot of factors causing this shift in weather patterns while the biggest one is the use of fossil fuels which produce carbon dioxide.

We were faced with the consequences of climate change recently when catastrophic floods hit Pakistan country in 2022. The main causes were increased precipitation and glaciers melting. One-third of the country was underwater. During the 2022 floods, the Indus River, which runs the length of the country, burst its banks and turned into a massive inland lake. This disaster impacted the country’s economy and human health.

Transitioning to another man-made challenge, deforestation is a problem that not only affects humans and other creatures it also is one of the reasons for climate change. The burning of forests and clearing out of trees lead to serious crises in environmental health including desertification and an increase of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Agriculture is the most common reason as 80% of deforestation results from extensive cattle ranching and logging for materials and development.

If we look into the impacts of deforestation, currently Pakistan is serving as a forest-poor country. According to the report The Forestry Sector Master Plan has estimated that Pakistan is suffering an annual loss of 2.3 billion rupees as a result of flooding, erosion of fertile soil from upland watersheds, and siltation of reservoirs and irrigation systems.

Improper waste disposal creates pollution in the ecosystem which leads to health concerns for humans and animals. Similarly, it has adverse effects on flora and fauna and produces water pollution. Moreover, incineration of waste disposal causes air pollution while untreated nuclear waste disposal inland causes radioactive pollution. It also creates a loss of biodiversity which is currently the biggest threat to the survival of the ecosystem. Landfills have become dead zones which are growing bigger as time passes. These dead zones render the land useless and toxic.

For this issue at hand, it is declared that Mehmood Booti being used as an open dumping site is negatively impacting the environment of Lahore. Also, the case study of Karachi suggested the installation of biowaste digestion plants.

In aid of ecosystem to create a healthy environment and help spread awareness through different tactics and programs came into being Eco-Revival Pakistan Organization. This organization was officially founded on August 6, 2023, and promised to aim for a better future in terms of the health and survival of the ecosystem. It has a vision where SDG implementation, projects for better agricultural production activities, nutritive programs, and quality education on the environment are provided and seen through.

Notably, the founding member Ms. Khadija and co-founder Mr. Zain-ul-Abidin of The Eco-Revival Organization had set out to work for the hierarchy of the society which includes managing director Mr. Sami-Ur-Rahman. With this purpose in mind, the managing director takes responsibility for the executive director, research director, junior director PR manager, and director linkages. The steering committee takes part in the aimed projects to help awareness in the public.

The current project the organization is working on is to spread awareness to the target public about the ecosystem and the issues arising in the environment due to climate change. The organization is encouraging the public to take part in webinars held by the society and make an effort to help change the environment into a better state.

Recently, three webinars had been held by the organization. On July 22, 2023 guest speaker Mr. Daniel Lux approached the public through Eco-Revival Pakistan about Sustainable Approaches for a Safer Planet. Moreover, on July 29, 2023, another webinar was held where the guest speakers Dr. Carol Ziegler and Ms. Khadija Iftikhar Saqib spoke about the topic Global Warming: Threats to Human Health. On August 5, 2023, the guest speaker Mr. Ssenyange Apollo expressed his thoughts on the topic Our Only Planet: Earth.

These webinars claim the purpose of knowledge and awareness about the current problems rising in our environments and the possible solutions to tackle them. As the saying goes Obligation Of Every Nation, Ecosystem Restoration!  Eco-Revival organization endeavors to achieve just that. Following this sentiment, the purpose is to revive our environment and make it a better place to survive for every species living there.

Sooner or later, we will have to recognise that the Earth has rights, too, to live without pollution. What mankind must know is that human beings cannot live without Mother Earth, but the planet can live without humans. – Evo Morales
